SURF LIFESAVING

What Is a Lifesaver?

A lifesaver is a trained volunteer committed to protecting lives on our beaches. Whether it’s performing rescues, administering first aid, or educating the public, lifesavers are the heart of our club and the frontline of coastal safety.

A surf rescue team member in a yellow jacket and red hat helps a young girl in a black swimsuit at the beach. They are near a yellow rescue surfboard and a red and yellow rescue flag under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

There are many pathways into surf lifesaving, and while the Bronze Medallion remains the flagship qualification of the movement, it’s far from the only way to contribute. You can train as a drone pilot, providing vital aerial surveillance, or become a Radio Operator, assisting with communication and coordination during emergencies. If you already hold a First Aid Certificate and CPR qualification from a Registered Training Organisation, you can step straight into patrols as a First Aider.

Lifesaving isn’t just about being in the surf. From first aid and radio operations to logistics, support, and administration, there are plenty of important roles that don’t require you to get your feet wet. Every skill and every volunteer strengthens our club and helps keep the community safe.

If you’re keen to get involved but don’t yet have your First Aid Certificate—no problem. North Haven SLSC, in partnership with Surf Life Saving SA, provides free nationally recognised training to help you become a patrolling member. First aid and resuscitation skills are invaluable, and you never know when you might need to use them.
