Donald “Bullet” Henderson
Don “Bullet” Henderson was a towering figure in surf lifesaving whose involvement spanned more than six decades across NSW, South Australia, and the UK. Beginning at Freshwater SLSC in 1951, he quickly excelled as both a competitor and leader—winning Australian titles on the surf board, rowing in national finals, and serving as Club Captain. After moving to South Australia in 1962, Don continued his competitive success with West Beach SLSC before travelling to England, where he worked as a professional lifeguard at the challenging Perranporth Beach and received the Royal Humane Society’s Certificate in Vellum for bravery.Returning to SA, Don became a foundational member of the newly formed Taperoo Beach (now North Haven) SLSC, serving on the committee and later as President for 20 years. He coached numerous successful board, ski, and boat competitors, earned State and national medals as a sweep, and contributed extensively as an official and examiner. A dedicated historian of the movement, Don was honoured with State and National President’s Awards for his work documenting surf lifesaving history. Peter “Jamo” Jamieson

Peter joined Taperoo Beach SLSC in 1972–73, earning his Bronze Medallion that same season, followed by his Instructor’s Certificate in 1974 and Examiner’s Certificate in 1984. Over his long commitment to surf lifesaving he has gained numerous qualifications up to Assessor level and completed his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment in 2014. Peter has served on the State Patrol Inspection Team multiple times and officiated at both State and Australian Championships. Within the club he has held an extensive range of leadership roles, including five years as President, three as Secretary, and several terms as Vice President, Radio Officer, Vice-Captain, Members Representative, and Promotions Officer.A highly accomplished competitor and patrolling member, Peter has been Senior Club Champion 10 times, Masters Champion eight times, a multi‑time marathon and Iron Man winner, and a member of the Reserve Boat Crew that claimed State bronze in 1981. He has been recognised repeatedly for his outstanding service—winning Best Club Member four times, Club Lifesaver of the Year six times, and SA Lifesaver of the Year in 2004 and 2012. In 2006 the club honoured him by naming a surf boat the Peter Jamieson. His patrol record is extraordinary, with 5,788 patrol hours, 21 Most Patrol Hours awards, 23 seasons over 100 hours, and the National Medal for more than three decades of service. FOUNDING MEMBER | 1973 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Dave began his surf lifesaving journey at Semaphore SLSC, earning his Bronze Medallion in 1966 and competing in Rescue and Resuscitation, surf belt, and surf races. In 1967 he was suspended—along with three others—for “causing discord” by attempting to form a new club at Taperoo Beach. Undeterred, Dave and Michael Gregurke became the driving forces behind establishing the Taperoo Beach SLSC on 1 May 1967, where Dave served as the inaugural Secretary, followed by roles as Club Captain, Publicity Officer, and Chief Instructor.A dedicated competitor and leader, Dave also initiated the club’s first History Book, laying the foundation for the historical records still maintained today. In 1972 he launched an ambitious fundraising program, organising highly successful discos at local hotels and securing major Australian bands of the era—including AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Skyhooks, and Sherbet—raising over $10,000 in two years. Tony “Frog” Nelson began his surf lifesaving career at Semaphore SLSC, earning his Bronze Medallion in 1966 and competing in both junior and senior R&R and surf races. When discussions began about forming a new club at Taperoo Beach, Tony was among the first Bronze holders to support the idea. With his brother Dave unable to sign early correspondence due to suspension from Semaphore, Tony stepped in to sign the official letters that helped establish the Taperoo Beach SLSC.Tony went on to hold numerous key roles, serving five years as Secretary, a decade as Junior Chair, and later as Vice President and President. As a competitor he captained the junior R&R team to a State bronze medal, won the President’s Trophy and Senior Club Championship, and later achieved Masters success with a double ski gold in 2002. Across nearly 400 patrol hours and 15 years of service, Tony “Frog” Nelson played an essential role in shaping the foundations and spirit of the North Haven SLSC.Patrick “Patty” Critchley
FOUNDING MEMBER | 1976 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Patty was one of the 12 founding members of the Taperoo Beach Surf Life Saving Club and earned his Bronze Medallion in the club’s first squad in March 1968. He quickly became a leader within surf lifesaving, gaining his Instructor’s Certificate in 1969, joining the Board of Examiners in 1973, and officiating at both State and Australian Championships. Patty went on to hold every major senior position in the club, serving as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Club Captain, Vice Captain, Publicity Officer, First Aid Officer, Gear Steward, and Chief Instructor—reflecting his extraordinary commitment and versatility.
A dedicated patrolling member, Patty logged an impressive 1,145 patrol hours by 1993, earning multiple awards including Most Patrol Hours, five President’s Trophies, and five Best Training Awards. He was honoured with Surf Life Saving Australia’s 75 Year Commemoration Medal in 1982 and later had a surf boat named after him. Though not primarily a competitor, he claimed a bronze medal in the Open First Aid State Championships in 1987. Patty’s loyalty to the club endured beyond his lifetime, leaving a significant bequest that continues to support the North Haven SLSC today.We continue to honor Patty's Legacy through our annual Patty Critchley All Age Beach relay.Gavan “Penguin” Farmer
FOUNDING MEMBER | 1977 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Gavan is one of the 12 founding members of the Taperoo Beach SLSC and served on the inaugural Management Committee as the Members Representative. Over the decades he has been one of the club’s most dedicated leaders, holding key roles including 11 years as Club Captain, 12 years as Board Captain, 13 years as Ski Captain, and multiple seasons as Vice-Captain, coach, and instructor. Gavan earned his Bronze Medallion in 1966 and Instructor’s Certificate in 1969, later adding qualifications in Advanced Resuscitation, Senior First Aid, and IRB driving.An exceptional competitor and patrolling member, Gavan has completed more than 1,500 patrol hours and is the club’s most decorated athlete, with 81 State Championship medals, six national medals, and countless club titles across board, ski, ironman, marathon, and Masters events. He played a key role when the club won the prestigious “Wales” Patrol Efficiency Award in 1978/79 and was honoured with Surf Life Saving Australia’s 75 Year Commemoration Medal in 1982. In 2016, Gavan received his 50 Year Service Certificate, recognising a lifetime of extraordinary contribution to North Haven SLSC and surf lifesaving in South Australia.Elaine Farmer OAM

Elaine has been part of the club since its very beginning, earning the Resuscitation Certificate in the first award squad in February 1968 and later gaining her Bronze Medallion in 1981. Over the years she achieved a wide range of qualifications up to Assessor level, completed her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and has continued to assess and support member development. Elaine devoted nearly 30 years to the Management Committee, serving two years as President, eight as Vice President, 13 as Secretary, as well as terms as Captain of Competition and Members Representative.
A trailblazer throughout surf lifesaving, Elaine became the first female President of any surf life saving club in Australia in 1985, the first woman elected to the SLSSA Board of Management in 1982, and only the third woman ever awarded Life Membership of Surf Life Saving Australia in 2012. She has won 18 State Championship medals—the most of any female North Haven competitor—and was appointed to the National R&R Judging Panel in 1989. Her contributions have been recognised with numerous honours including a World Life Saving Citation of Merit (1993), State Life Membership (1998), an OAM (1999), and an International Lifesaving Citation for developing the Nipper Safe program (2008). In 2017, Elaine marked her 50-year service milestone—an extraordinary legacy of leadership, innovation, and dedication.Chris Wilkinson
1989 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Chris Wilkinson joined the North Haven SLSC in 1975 as a junior and gained his Bronze Medallion that same year and his Instructors Certificate in 1984.
In 1975 Chris was the Junior Club Champion and won three Most Outstanding Competitor trophies in the U18 Surf Boat and Reserve Surf Boat.
In 1988/89 he was a member of the Open Surf Boat that won the Best Training Award.
Chris was a true “Boatie” as he competed in Junior, Senior and Masters Boat crews over 22 years. He was a member of boat crews that won State Championships Medals in all divisions and was a member of the “C” boat crew which, in 1990, won the Club’s first ever gold medal in surf boats.
Chris held several committee positions and was elected Club Captain for three years, Members Representative for two years, Vice-Captain for three years, Boat Captain for three years and IRB Officer for one year. He gained his IRB Driver Certificate in 1986/87.
Chris performed 527 personal patrol hours and spent 23 years in surf lifesaving. Bronwyn Jamieson
1995 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Before joining North Haven SLSC, Bronwyn was involved in the Women’s Auxiliary and was President of that fundraising group in 1977/78. At that time, women were not permitted to join the Surf Life Saving Association and could only become members of a Club in 1979. Bronwyn became a member of the North Haven SLSC in the 1982-83 season joining husband Peter and sons Troy and Brad who were active members of the Club. Bronwyn was elected as the Junior Chair in 1982/83 and she remained in that position for the next 10 years. In 1982 she was awarded the LC Partington Trophy for her role as Junior Chair. In 1986 she was awarded the Best Club Effort jointly with husband Peter. She won this award again in 1997/98. In additional to that Bronwyn was elected as Treasurer for six years and Promotion and Fundraising Officer for four years. Bronwyn gained her Resuscitation Certificate in 1985 and Resuscitation Certificate with CPR in 1986.Catherine Wilkinson
1999 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Cathy Wilkinson joined the North Haven SLSC in 1980 and gained her Bronze Medallion the same year and her Instructors Certificate in 1985.
Cathy held the position of Club Secretary for nine years and was Chief Instructor for two years.
In 1984 and 1985 she won the Female Club Marathon and in 1985/86 was the Female Club Champion. Cathy was a keen competitor and in the 1985/86 season she became a member of the newly formed women’s Rescue and Resuscitation team.
In 1987 Cathy was awarded the Best Club Member for her efforts. Cathy completed 317 hours of patrol and spent 19 years in surf lifesaving.
Cathy was the prime mover in many fund raising ventures by organising functions such as Quiz Nights, Car Boot Sales and a Garage Sale all of which raised a substantial amount of money.Wayne Burt
2002 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Wayne joined the Taperoo Beach SLSC in 1972 and gained his Bronze Medallion in that same year followed by his Instructor’s Certificate in 1973. Wayne was Vice President for two years from 1982-84, Secretary for one year, and Assistant Secretary for one year. He was Treasurer for two years from 1973 and a further three years from 2001. He served two years as First Aid Officer and Auditor for one. In 1973/74 he won the award for Most Patrol Hours and again performed 100+ patrol hours in 1976/77. Wayne earned the Best Club Member award in 1981 and finished his surf lifesaving patrols with a total of 382 hours. Wayne competed for the Club in many beach events namely sprint, beach relay and beach flags.Michael “Pig” Gregurke
2002 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Michael joined Semaphore SLSC in 1964, earning his Bronze Medallion that same year. Recognising the growing need for a surf lifesaving presence further north, he—along with Dave Nelson and several other members—began exploring the idea of establishing a new club at Taperoo Beach. Although this initiative led to their departure from Semaphore in 1967, it became the catalyst for something significant. Michael and Dave went on to become the driving forces behind the creation of the Taperoo Beach SLSC, actively engaging with local service clubs and the community to build the strong foundations of what would later become North Haven SLSC. Michael, being a “hands on” person, built the first shark tower and transported it to the beach for patrols. He was the first Club Captain, a position he held for two years and then Vice Captain the following year. 0n 25th November 1967, using a tent supplied by Michael’s family, members began their first patrol for Taperoo Beach with Michael as the first Patrol Captain. He was a member of the Senior Rescue and Resuscitation team formed in 1968, which made the finals at the first Adelaide Branch Championships that same year. In 1983 Michael was awarded his 300 Patrol Hour trophy. After several years absence Michael returned to the Club and was elected Treasurer for the 1993/94 season.Troy Jamieson
2013 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Troy joined North Haven SLSC in 1983–84 as a seven‑year‑old nipper, quickly finding success in beach events and earning multiple placings at State Junior Championships. He became a cadet patrolling member in 1989, achieved his Bronze Medallion in 1991, and went on to gain a wide range of surf lifesaving qualifications including Advanced Resuscitation and IRB awards. Over the years, Troy contributed enormously to club leadership, serving as Vice President in 2003 and then as President for eight consecutive years. He also held numerous key roles such as Junior Captain, Board Captain, Captain of Competition, Captain of Patrols, Members Representative, and Boat Captain.
A highly respected competitor and patrolling member, Troy received many club awards, including Junior Club Champion, Cadet Club Champion, Best Club Effort, the President’s Trophy, Senior Club Champion, and multiple patrol efficiency honours. He competed successfully across beach, board, and surf boat disciplines, highlighted by a gold medal in the Under‑18 Beach Relay and Masters medals in both board and boat events. With more than 1,300 patrol hours recorded and more than four decades of service, Troy has been an influential leader, athlete, and role model within North Haven SLSC.
Andrew “Rat” Renfrey
2013 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Andrew joined North Haven SLSC in 1989, gaining his Bronze Medallion the same year, followed by his Training Officer’s Certificate, Advanced Resuscitation Certificate, and Age Group Manager Award. He went on to serve the club in a wide range of leadership roles, including two terms as Vice President, Club Captain, Board and Ski Captain, Ski Captain for three seasons, Members Representative, and Junior Chairman. His early commitment and versatility made him a valued member of the Management Committee through many key periods of the club’s development.
As a competitor, Andrew achieved strong results across ski and team events, becoming Senior Club Champion in 1991 and receiving multiple club honours including Best Training Award, Most Improved Competitor, and Most Outstanding Competitor. He won a State bronze medal in the Open Men’s Double Ski in 2002–03 with Garth Tierney and represented North Haven at both State and Australian Masters Championships, collecting a wide array of medals in ski, relay, and Taplin events. Andrew has completed over 900 patrol hours and contributed 27 years of service to surf lifesaving, reflecting a long-standing dedication to the club and the wider movement.
Andrew “Oz” Osborne
2017 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Andrew earned his Bronze Medallion in December 1994 and went on to achieve a range of additional qualifications, including Advanced Resuscitation, IRB Crew, and IRB Driver. A committed leader within the club, he has served six years as Swim Captain and four years as Club Treasurer—taking on significant responsibility during his first year in the role to restore the club’s accounts. Andrew has always been an active participant in club events, winning the President’s Trophy for Club Swims twice, recording the Fastest Club Swim Time on eight occasions, and contributing to multiple team achievements including the Casey Cooper Trophy and Farmer Henderson events.
A dedicated patrolling member, Andrew has completed more than 25 years of patrol service and over 1,400 hours, earning the Most Patrol Hours award in 1995–96 and joining the small group who have achieved over 100 patrol hours in their first season. He has been a consistent performer in competition, winning the Senior Club Championship in 2002–03, six Club Marathons, and 11 State Masters medals. Andrew’s long-standing commitment to patrols, competition, and club leadership has made him an invaluable contributor to North Haven SLSC.
Marilyn Poulton
2021 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Marilyn Poulton has been a dedicated and indispensable member of North Haven Surf Life Saving Club for more than three decades. What began as supporting her son Jared through nippers evolved into a long-standing commitment to the Club’s growth and wellbeing. Taking on the role of Treasurer with humility and determination, Marilyn quickly became known for her meticulous attention to detail and her unwavering commitment to accountability. She manages the Club’s finances with precision, ensures every dollar is tracked, and continually supports Club operations—from stocking the bar and kitchen to working regular bar shifts and contributing to key projects such as sourcing and coordinating hall furniture and improvements.
Beyond her official duties, Marilyn’s generosity and reliability shine through in countless behind-the-scenes contributions. She washes kitchen linens weekly during operational periods, volunteers as a friendly weekend barista during nipper barbecues, and is often found assisting Garry with maintenance and improvement projects around the Club. Her dedication, warmth, and tireless willingness to help have made her an integral part of our community, embodying the very best of North Haven SLSC’s volunteer spirit.
Gary Poulton
2021 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Garry Poulton has been a pillar of North Haven Surf Life Saving Club for more than 30 years, contributing extraordinary time, skill, and dedication to the Club’s development and day‑to‑day operations. After first becoming involved through his son Jared’s nipper journey, Garry went on to earn his Level 1 Surf Sports Official qualification so our surf boat crews could compete, giving years of voluntary service at carnivals. As the Club grew, so too did Garry’s involvement—eventually becoming the backbone of the Building Gear and Maintenance Committee. His handiwork can be found in every corner of the clubrooms: from the full kitchen refurbishment, to the construction of the nippers shed, to ongoing lawn care and countless repairs that keep the Club running smoothly year-round.
Garry is known for being at the Club at least one day every week—rain, hail, or shine—volunteering his time to ensure our facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming. He has stepped in during staffing shortages, including taking on cleaning duties for months as a volunteer, and continues to support weekend nipper barbecues alongside Marilyn. Whether meeting contractors on-site, assisting with facility upgrades, or lending a hand to any task that needs doing, Garry’s commitment is unwavering. His reliability, craftsmanship, and heart make him an invaluable member of North Haven SLSC and a shining example of lifelong service to our community.
Leanne Lawrence
2021 LIFE MEMBER OF NORTH HAVEN SLSC
Leanne Lawrence has been a committed and influential member of North Haven Surf Life Saving Club since joining in 2008, when her daughters first began their nipper journey. What started as helping to supervise an age group quickly grew into a deep and lasting contribution to the Club’s junior programs and broader operations. Leanne assisted with Nippers almost every Saturday for well over a decade—even long after her own children had moved on—and served as Junior Chair from 2011 to 2014. She earned her Age Group Manager Certificate and Senior First Aid qualification, initiated the now‑beloved Junior Club Championships, and helped re-establish the Nipper Sub‑Committee in 2017/18. Leanne also gained her Level 1 Surf Sports Official accreditation and continues to support Junior carnivals as both an official and long-serving media official. Her leadership extended beyond the beach with the creation and organisation of multiple Club camps, as well as meaningful contributions to major Club events, including our 50‑year celebrations.
While Leanne has been invaluable across countless junior and Club-wide initiatives, her greatest impact has been in her role as Club Administrator—a position she has fulfilled with exceptional dedication for the past six years. Leanne quietly manages the essential but often unseen work that keeps the Club running year after year: annual submissions, insurance and affiliation requirements, uniform orders, administrative compliance, the Annual Report, and much more. Her reliability, efficiency, and unwavering commitment have made her the backbone of Club operations, and she now marks an incredible ten years of service on the Club Management Committee. Leanne’s sustained efforts, leadership, and devotion to North Haven SLSC make her an outstanding contributor and an integral part of our community.
